Considering the last second goal by San Jose it could have been 6-2-0 or 5-2-1. Pretty good against the leagues best teams and without our top two Dmen in Morrissey and Buff.
I was impressed by T.J Brodie's speed and how he accelerates out of the corners with the puck. Also was interested to watch Magiapane because he got a rare start. The kid lit it up in Junior in the OHL for Hawerchuck's Barrie Colts but another example of a comparative to Petan. Mangiapane has better speed , stickhandling, and shot than Petan and is still only playing on rare occasions over the past three years. He was noticeable last night but at only 5'10" he needs much more than that ( Gaudreau/Marner type skills) before he will make it in the NHL.
...and I apologize in advance for mentioning Petan again. |

Also I mentioned earlier this season that I would trade Laine for M. Tkachuk straight up . I stand by that comment. Tkachuk is getting better and better by the game. Five points the other night. He shows up every night, plays a hard grinding game very much like his father, and can score in bunches as well.
Laine is electrifying to fans with his shot but I'll be one of the few to say we actually would have been better off with MT in that same draft. |

Tkachuk would have been sent back to juniors for his first 2 years, and this would have been his rookie year if he was drafted by the Jets. Also, based on the way Maurice coaches he would have played on the 4th line and given 8 minutes a game. |

He's turning into a Marchand with about 75% less douchery. He still has 25% but its fun...
Our challenge is what he gets paid... He'll likely be the highest paid Flame. |

Good article. I don’t think its a system problem as much as an “all in 100%” problem. The systems worked fine last year. The issue I see is more one of lapses, less intensity in the first period than opponents, a little less commitment to doing the greasy work (as in the article).
I think the playoffs will awaken them and we will see that we are well suited to playoff hockey. |

I'm glad the Jets didn't take Tkachuk in the draft. He's going to be the future captain of the Flames, he's probably going to get money like Draisatl in Edmonton. How much is Laine going to get when he's an RFA? |

Think of this, what if Wpg would have only jumped to #3, #4, or 5 instead of #2? So, by order of ranking the Jets might have potentially selected 3 - Dubois, 4 - Puljujarvi, or 5 Juvolevi.
In that group, I think the team is better off with #2 Laine if you couldn't get Tkackuk. But, there was a possibility the Jets could have missed them both had they moved up to a different spot.
Edit: Mind you Dubois is doing quite well in Columbus. Recall the controversy when the Finnish GM Kekolainen didn't take Puljujarvi at 3? He took the center Dubois at 3 instead of Puljujarvi.
But Tkachuk is a heck of a player, no doubt.
Brian Burke was talking about the lottery and says it needs to be improved, says that only the bottom 5 or 6 should be in the lottery and then everyhting after 5 or 6 is just in regular order. |

I'd debate that statement. MT was a star in junior. Two points a game in the OHL. Played very well on Team Canada as well. He would have easily made the Jets lineup from Day 1 and likely started on the third line before working his way higher over the next two seasons in a similar fashion to Kyle Connor and what we are slowly seeing with Jack Roslovic. He may have even started on the second line. It's not like Laine wasn't given the chance right away on the top two lines. MT would have been treated in similar fashion.

Brian Burke said himself that Tkachuk was a bubble player in his first year with the Flames, and it could have gone either way whether he made the team out of training camp. The Jets wouldn't have taken a chance and sent him back.
His second year, I will grant you he probably would have made the team, having said that look at Vesalainen given no chance in the top 6 and sent to the Moose. That wouldn't have been possible for Tkachuk, it would have been junior or the Jets.

I think its way too early to say if you would or wouldn’t trade Tkachuk for Laine. I remember during Temmu’s rookie year Adam Oates was quoted as saying Temmu couldn’t carry Joe Juneau’s jock. Making prediction on guys in their early twenties can come back and bite you. I’m pretty confident both these players will have excellent careers. |

Agreed Ross. Keep Laine on the first line where he belongs and he averages a point a game. I don't see how anyone can complain about an 80 point player.

Yes. My wrong. I think there was some debate about that in the months before the tourney. I think he could have maybe played for either.

Good news....Eklund headline says Buff might be out long term, and since he's almost never correct on anything, it means he should be back any day. |

You can’t go a day without taking a low blow at someone, eh? |

Apparently Roslovic is a healthy scratch and Hendriks is going in according to PoMo. Supposedly to get Hendriks into a game is the report.
This topic alone should add 3 or 4 pages of comments for Pete's blog.

Can everyone pay attention to 55’s backchecking (or lack there of ) tonight please.
Also, I find it funny that reports have Petan signing a two year deal
In Toronto. Where the GM clearly likes him and the coach doesn’t. I feel bad for Petan to be in that situation but do find the GM/Coach in different pages humorous. By the way, Petan was minus 3 in less than 6 minutes of ice time his last game. Criticize plus minus all you want, that’s not good, but you won’t catch PETE being critical of twitter fan favorited. |

I just read up that as well and looks like a 2 year extension is possible coming. I hope it works out for him.
The article also included; Toronto needs to find underpaid forwards to help fill out the fringes of their roster as they approach a cap crunch, but Petan will need to prove that he can perform at the NHL level before earning the trust of head coach Mike Babcock.
Sound familiar? |

BTW, I have to say this about Petan. I actually thought it was his year this year for a full shot at a roster spot with the Jets. He was slotted in.
Then, his father passed, which we all know is a horrible situation to deal with. By the time he came back, and it was bit of time understandably before he came back but then you had Lemieux performing relatively well and Appleton performing reasonably well and these guys passed him on the chart.
I hope it works out for him because it has been a crappy year for the kid. |

In defence of all 3, Tanev, Lowry, and Little, none of them are stylistically suited for playing together.
Lowry is all defence, and an excellent play driver. He facilitates offence, but doesn’t create much.
He can also carry only 1 player at a time.
Tanev is also all defence, but to a lesser degree. He’s above average defensively, but is where offence goes to die. He’s also a bit of a possession drag. Good in small doses.
Little is a drag in all 3 main categories, but also has a tendency to turn it around when he’s with play drivers that go north-south like he does. The Perreault-Little-Ehlers line was utterly dominant.
Lowry does the flying, Tanev is a weak co-pilot, and Little is a lost passenger |

they are playing together... does that mean they are a real line yet? or are they still earning their stripes?
10 games in, I expect some evidence of chemistry starting about now. |
